I'm an African Wild Dog/Red Fox that studies the adaptive capacity of tropical plants to respond to climate change. I got my undergraduate degree (Marine Biology, 2016) at Oregon State University; my Masters (Biology, 2020) at Boise State University; and my PhD (EEB-GC, 2024) at Boise State University (with one of my equal co-advisors representing the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens of the city of Geneva). I currently live in the Pacific Northwest.

Research Interests

I'm using the tropical tree genus Pandanus as a model in my endeavor to measure and predict the adaptive capacity of tropical plants to respond to climate change. I chose Pandanus because it is ecologically, culturally, economically, and spiritually important to people across the old world tropics: it's a keystone species in many ecosystems,: serving as food for a variety of animals, from lemurs to crabs to fish. Pandanus also stabilizes soil, preventing erosion of both slopes and strands. It was and is used in indigenous methods of construction, being used for clothes, homes, and (most impressively) in the sails the Polynesians used to settle the myriad islands of the Pacific. Pandanus is also used economically for its edible leaves or scented flowers. This genus also features in indigenous spirituality in some Polynesian and Melanesian belief systems. Additionally, Pandanus is widespread and occurs in a variety of environments, from the humid rainforests of SE Asia to the strands of Hawaii to the drylands of Madagascar.

Furry Interests

FxJKc7UaMAE7RaL.jpg

I'm a visual artist (both manual and digital), fursuiter, and fursuit maker!

I also love hanging out with other furs, talking shop with other SciFurs, and sharing my creations on my Twitter (XylemFurry).

The cyberpunk aesthetic is also interesting to me, as is drawing furries in the costumes of different historical eras!

I am not currently taking commissions.

What's up with your fursona's species?

My fursona is a fawdox (or fAWDox, pl. fawdoxes). The fawdox species name is a portmanteau of AWD (shorthand for "African Wild Dog", Lycaon pictus) and Fox (Vulpes). Fawdoxes generally express the distinctive coloration of their L. pictus side, where individuals possess entirely unique, asymmetrical coat patterns of brown, black, and white markings (with the muzzle always black), and their ears are generally large and rounded like those of L. pictus, however, they have the long, fluffy tails and more gracile snouts characteristic of Vulpes. If it is part red fox (V. vulpes, such as myself) the fawdox will have the black stockings characteristic of that species. Fawdoxes are highly social creatures and engage in the sneeze voting characteristic of L. pictus, whereby pack decisions are made collectively. Fawdoxes use both the "chi chi" noises of their L. pictus ancestry and Foxish of their Vulpes ancestry.
